600 littered plastic bottles were used by Tom Davies, a New Zealand native living in Fiji, to create this boat. It measures 4.5 metres long and 1.4 metres wide. All the 600ml bottles used are glued together to a layer of foam underneath. In Tom’s tests, the boat can hold up to three big Fijian men.
Tom’s vision is for villagers to reuse the massive number of plastic bottles littering the seashores and roadsides. “Instead of using bamboos for the bilibili (raft), they can use empty plastic bottles and it lasts much longer than bamboo rafts,” Tom said.
With so many options out there, disposable plastic bottles should really be avoided unless absolutely necessary. Plus, the water tastes better if it is not coming from a plastic bottle.
