A flashlight is essential during a power outage, but since no one ever expects the power to go out, flashlights are rarely up to the task. Dead batteries or simply forgetting where you’ve even stored the flashlight mean extra time running into things in the dark. A new product from the MoMA Store promises to solve this problem once and for all.

Called the “Bulb Flashlight” this device is so brilliantly simple it’s a wonder no one thought of it before now. The LED bulb is designed to screw into any standard light fixture, delivering bright, low-heat illumination. Power outage, just pop the bulb out of its socket, and use it as a flashlight that’s guaranteed never to be dead. (Told you it was brilliant!)

I know what you’re thinking: What? How?! So let’s take a look at how this incredibly convenient gadget can provide energy-efficient lighting while also helping out in an emergency.

The Bulb Flashlight includes a rechargeable battery and is designed to recharge itself anytime it’s screwed into a light fixture. When you need to use it independently of the lamp or socket, just unscrew, extend the telescopic handle and use it as a flashlight for up to three hours.

Like all LEDs, it offers superior lighting efficiency over all other types of bulbs. “It uses just six watts of power to produce light equivalent to a 40W incandescent bulb. The LEDs will last up to 60,000 hours,” states the MoMA Store.

If just three hours of battery-free light makes you nervous, you just need to install a couple of Bulb Flashlights around the house. By Beth Buczynski
